Trick or Treating

Posted by Chris

We went to Shawnee last night to trick-or-treat with Andrea's dad, Gary. It was so much fun! I don't think we had ever gone door-to-door trick-or-treating before with the kids. Normally, in Coffeyville, we would go to the annual church carnival & then take them around to several of our friend's houses to trick-or-treat. Josiah was Clark Kent, Micah was Cowboy Micah, and Emerie was Winnie the Pooh. We were surprised at how much Emerie took to the whole thing. I think after watching her brothers hit the first house she started telling her Poppy that she wanted to get down (as he was holding her) and she started walking toward the house! From that house one we would carry her, set her down as we approached the house & let her walk up with her pumpkin basket to get candy. I'm not sure, but I think she might have actually gotten more candy than her brothers (who could resist such a cute little girl?)! We had a lot of fun.

The boys are dancing around the room as I'm typing this listening to "Flip Flops" by "Paul Wright" on the stereo. They're having a pretty good time. Normally I'd welcome them getting themselves worn out, but as we're needing to get ready to go to Bridgeway I'd better get them upstairs & get dressed.

Here's the iPod pictures I promised. Can't believe it's been a week already & I'm just now getting these up. Things have been pretty crazy - especially with our pumpkin carving/trick or treating activities over the last several days.

Don't Cruise Through Life Like The Captain Of The Titanic
Michael Q. Pink
Oct 21, 2004

You have heard it quoted, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths." A closer look at this passage reveals some important clues. Let me begin by giving a more literal translation. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not to your own ability to distinguish or discern. In all ways, know Him and He will straighten and smooth out your paths.

Remember Adam? He wanted to distinguish or discern for himself good and evil. So, he partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, however, we often find ourselves wanting to do the same thing. We want to determine what is good, what is best, what is right, what is wrong, and we are simply not equipped to get it all right all the time. We act on a belief that something is good and right, being unaware of circumstances beyond our ability to anticipate or control.

We cruise through life like the captain of the Titanic who ignored seven warnings before crashing into an iceberg sinking the unsinkable. Was he a good sailor? He probably was. Did he do the right thing? He obviously did not. Had he known his pending fate, he would have changed course. There is the rub - apart from God's loving warnings, we cannot know the foolishness of our wisest choices. No wonder He calls us sheep!

God Confiding in Us

I was catching up this morning on some devotional emails that I get in my Inbox each day. It had been a good week since I had looked at them last. One of the devotions really hit me this morning & I wanted to share it with you ...

Get To Know God And Allow Him To Straighten And Smooth Your Paths
Michael Q. Pink
Oct 22, 2004

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. We learned that in grade school. Did you know that God says if we know Him in all our ways, He will make our paths both straight and smooth?

You are probably familiar with Proverbs 3:6 which says, "In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." It is more literally translated "know" Him, instead of acknowledge Him. To me, that is a big difference. Acknowledging someone strikes me as something like a polite greeting. Knowing someone requires an investment of time and involves an element of risk. The word acknowledge, translated, really means to know someone like a familiar friend.

God says if we know Him like a familiar friend, in all our ways He will shorten our journey, by making our path straight and smooth. So how, in the course of business, do we know Him? How did Abraham know God? God called Abe his friend. Abe did not even have a Bible. Abe just communed with God, especially at night by the stars. They confided in each other. Is that not what friends do? You will notice, God confided in Abraham. Begin by confiding in God and He will confide in you. In those times of confiding, our faith grows, our paths straighten and our friendship with the One who created us takes on new meaning.

Wow! "God confided in Abraham." I had never really thought of it that way before! Imagine being so intimate with our Creator that He chooses to confide in us, to let us in on His plans & what He is setting about to accomplish all around us!

I want to be there! I want to be that intimate with my Father, so that I may see what He is doing in my life & in the lives of those around me - that I may join Him & experience His life for me!

Kerry/Democrats on Iraq/Hussein/WMDs

Jason (whom I work with) has just posted a collection of John Kerry/fellow Democrat quotes (with source links) regarding Iraq, Saddam Hussein, & weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). Quite interesting going into election week. Good read ... http://www.disk919.com.

Clark Kent and a Cowboy

Posted by Chris

Short post - I'll post more with pictures in the next day or two ... Micah gets to dress up in his Halloween outfit for school today. He's opted to be "Cowboy Micah" this year. They're going to have a 'parade' up and down the halls of the school with parents giving out candy. I told Andrea to try and take some pics with the digital camera, though she's going to have her hands full holding Emerie, watching Si, etc. so we'll see. At the very least I think she was going to get a shot of him in his outfit before they left for school. I'll post more Halloween & other news tonight or tomorrow. (Josiah is going to be Clark Kent - I think Emerie is going to be Pooh Bear)

Me and My FREE iPod!

Posted by Chris

Yep - you heard me right ... my free iPod came via FedEx on Monday while I was at work! Yippee! For those of you who have been following the iPod saga you know it has been a long time coming. Because of the huge popularity of the free iPods site and the shortage in production on iPods by Apple it took a full two months for mine to arrive after I ordered it. But really, why complain when it's FREE?! I took a few pics and will try to post these tonight or tomorrow.

Want your own? Go to www.tivoaddict.com (another of my sites) and click on the "Get your free iPod" graphic for step-by-step instructions. By the way, they've fixed the process & people are getting them MUCH faster than I did.

It’s Here!

The day finally arrived - FedEx delivered my free iPod on Monday morning while I was at work! I took it out of the shipping box & took several pictures (at which point Andrea just rolled her eyes and laughed at me). Pics of me with my free (yes, I said FREE) iPod coming soon!

Want your own? They've fixed the delivery chain a great deal and it won't take as long as it did for mine. Head over to www.tivoaddict.com (yep, that's my site as well) and click on the "Get your free iPod" graphic for step-by-step instructions.

A little about Si, Micah and Emerie, from Andrea

Posted by Chris

I emailed Mom some of the kids' goings-ons today and thought some of you might like to hear their latest as well. Enjoy...

Josiah was cracking us up yesterday. He was doing a word search as these words came out of his mouth: "You know, there's just nothing like a good word search... nothing like it." I replied, "Yep. Word searches are good." What else was I going to say? He also wanted to know if there were 2 suns, one in the sky and one in the middle of the earth (hence the discussion on the core and layers, magma, volcanos, etc.). Then he wanted me to explain the pink International Date Line on our world map (that was a tough one to explain).

He told me on his own initiative last week that he really likes school. I was glad to hear it. He and Micah and I made 2 batches of homemade playdough this week (Mom's recipe). Si made green and Micah made blue. We accidentally doubled the amount of cooking oil in Micah's batch so it was a little slimy, but still worked.

I think Si wants to be Clark Kent for Halloween. This means wearing journalist looking clothes with his superman pajama top underneath a half unbuttoned shirt. I need to find an old 'press' hat for him. I already asked my Dad, but he doesn't have one anymore. Thought maybe Uncle Sam (our family's optometrist) might have some old horn-rimmed glasses he can use. Of course, he might change his mind between now and then.

He can be such an encourager. Upon viewing Micah's made-up LiteBrite masterpiece (on Chris' LiteBrite from childhood) Josiah exclaimed, "Micah, that is so wonderful!" That child...

Micah wants to be a cowboy for Halloween. He loves to dress up so much. He may be a KingSaul-SuperMicahBoy-CowboyMicah before it's all said and done. In case you have not heard, he likes to be 'somebody' nearly every day. He's always wearing a plastic bat ring or a couple of watches or his fish sunglasses from First Southern or maybe a cowboy hat and toting some guns. When we took Emerie to the doctor yesterday (104 fever turned out to be another double ear infection) Micah wore his purple SuperMicahBoy cape with his fish glasses which I thought was a nice touch. He was noticed by absolutely everyone to which he was completely oblivious. If someone asked him who he was he replied, "SuperMicahBoy, and my new shoes make me run FAST," like it was the most natural thing in the world to say such things to perfect strangers. By the way, he's had those shoes since last May (thanks, Dad) but still thinks they are new.

He got a certificate from preschool this week that said 'when it comes to counting to 10, Micah Ediger is a high flier'. I thought - '10? He's doing dot-to-dots that go over a hundred'. He's been learning to spell colors and is starting to tell me what 3 letter words say from time to time. This last week he sounded out 'moo' and 'fun'. I feel reading won't be too far behind. Probably right when he turns five like his brother. Yesterday was Drew's (our neighborhood kiddo) Mom's birthday. The neighborhood kids made a little 'party' for her in Drew's driveway. Micah came home and made a card for her and gave her one of his Aflac (quack-quack) ducks. I thanked God for such a sweet, generous child. That child...

Ok - I just came back from stopping Emerie from pulling clothes out of her brothers' dresser drawers. She is the most 'getting into stuff' child I've ever had for sure. This week alone I have cleaned crayon and / or pencil off of the following: the front and back of our bathroom door, the slanted ceiling in the boys' room (for this one she was in her pack and play by their dresser. She stood up, opened Si's top drawer, found a pencil, and colored the ceiling), the front door of the butcher block cabinet, the front doors of the entertainment center, the washing machine, her highchair and several tiles in the kitchen. Fortunately she also colored on some actual paper. The boys weren't interested in coloring until at least 2, but she asks for colors. It's hard to keep them out of her reach when both boys like to do activity / game books all the time or make up mazes and games. She can reach a few inches over the edge of the kitchen table, so it has been a challenge.

She also likes to 'help' a lot... 'help' take clean, folded clothes out of the basket, help empty dresser drawers or even entire dressers (hers), help pull the toilet paper out and shred it, etc.

Yesterday Si came into the bathroom while I was in the shower to ask me a question. Emerie followed him in. After they left and I came out of the shower, I noticed that the clothes I had laid out were scattered on the floor. I also noticed something was missing. Emerie has picked up things before, but when I didn't see it on the floor in my room, the kitchen or living room I started wondering what she had done with it. A few hours later I saw her tearing up a piece of bread and putting it in the kitchen trash. A light bulb went on. Lo and behold when I opened the trash - there was the missing item! That child... I'm starting to wonder what else she has thrown away. I hope she doesn't ever get a hold of my keys.

Chris and I had such a good time on Wednesday night. It was so nice as we had not been out since our anniversary in July and needed that time. It was a relaxing evening. I told him I thought that sitting at the concert was the most he or I had 'sat' in weeks!

Well, I guess that concludes all the antics of the Edigers for now. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did (most of the time :-) .

Chick-Fil-A, Norah Jones & a Hippie

Posted by Chris

Wow! What a great concert last night! We had such a good time!

Kelli Foley (one of our students from Coffeyville who is now a student at OSU) came over around 6 pm to watch the kids for us for the evening. We grabbed a bite to eat at Chick-Fil-A (high scale dining!) before heading to the concert. The opening act was great - His name was Amos Lee. Just him & a guitar, but he had an amazing voice. I don't think he has a CD out yet - but one is supposed to be released on Blue Note records in March 2005. Norah was, of course, amazing as well. It was a nice concert - the kind I enjoy where you can just sit, relax & soak it in. Andrea sat next to a Hippie (we think). I swear she was acting like she was in church - raising her hands, shouting out, closing her eyes, swaying & singing along to every song Norah sang! It was a riot! Andrea & I tried to keep from laughing to loud as we didn't want to embarass her. It was pretty funny, though!

Amos' official site has three clips to listen to, but I could only get one to work. Here's another site with some of his songs that you can listen to: Click here to listen to more

Must Read Column

Posted by Chris

Alec passed along the following link to a Ben Stein column on E! entertainment's web site. It is amazing! I didn't even know that Stein was a Christian! It is a three-page article that will take you about 10 minutes to read - definitely worth the time!

Davy Wanted Me to Post This

Posted by Chris

Had a great talk with Davy Cantrell last night on the phone. I think between the two of us Andrea & I talked to him for close to an hour and a half! It was good just catching up with each other's lives (although he, like others, tends to know a lot more about our life because of this blog). He 'encouraged' me (ha!) to post something here as I have been getting out of the habit the past several weeks. Truth is we've been really busy, but I've felt like I need to force myself to post here on a regular basis to at least stay in the habit.

Writing, like many other disciplines in life, comes much easier when I am doing it on a regular basis. The struggle for so long in my life was that I was writing for everything else but pleasure, really. I had to write Bible studies for church, articles for LifeWay, and papers for Seminary. Now I only have one of those excuses so there really is no justification other than pleading on behalf of my schedule!

I am TOTALLY pumped! Tonight Andrea & I are going to see Norah Jones in concert at the Ford Center! The tickets were an anniversary present from Gary, Andrea's dad, back in July & we have been counting down the days since then. I can't wait! This is going to be the kind of concert that I really enjoy going to - the kind where you can just sit & enjoy the music and the artistry of the singer and musicians (in contrast to a lot of other concerts I've been to where you're forced to stand most of the time & the music is loud enough to make you not see straight). I'll definitely post our 'review' sometime in the next couple of days.

Not Me

Posted by Chris

Man! I got excited this morning because I thought there was a chance I was getting my iPod today, but [sigh] no luck. There are a few message boards that I check on a regular basis where people post information about iPod shipments/receiving theirs. This morning I checked & it seems a huge shipment went out on Friday. Many people who had ordered theirs on 8/24 were receiving theirs, so I thought I would check (mine was ordered on 8/26). Someone had posted a FedEx reference number so I used their tracking service & discovered that indeed someone in Edmond was going to be receiving theirs this morning! Woohoo! Only, after I called FedEx to confirm it was shipping to our house they told me it wasn't my package. Oh well, back to the waiting game. I'm assuming they will ship mine in the next week or two now, depending on how quickly they are doing it. Here's hoping!

No Time to Think

Posted by Chris

Man, can I go through spells of posting/not posting! Honestly I haven't had much time to really even think lately. Busy with work & then several projects going on at home (nights, weekends). Alec is coming into town this afternoon for the weekend & is going to watch K-State lose to OU with us (Ha!). Seriously, it will be nice to see him as he hasn't really been down since the day we moved. He stopped in for an hour or so a couple of months ago while he was in town shopping for a car, but that's about it.

On a side note -> I'm sitting here at Will's Cafe, a local coffee shop, during my lunch & glancing back & forth between my laptop & the TV airing coverage of the election campaigns. I'm sick of the presidential election. I know who I'm going to vote for and I can't imagine that a lot of Americans haven't decided yet. So let's go ahead & move up the elections to next week & get it over with already. But with the close race it is looking like we'll likely have to wait until next year to find out who won. Oh well - that's a nice thing about TiVo - no commercials & I can effectively ignore the campaign until election day - yeah! (don't even get me started on the Oklahoma race for Senate)

Come Ye Sinners

Posted by Chris

LISTEN/DOWNLOAD THIS SONG

Come ye sinners poor and needy
Weak and wounded sick and sore
Jesus ready stands to save you
Full of pity love and pow'r
He is able He is able
He is willing doubt no more
He is able He is able
He is will doubt no more

Come ye thirsty come and welcome
God's free bounty glorify
True belief and true repentance
Ev'ry grace that brings us nigh
Without money without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy
Without money without money
Come to Jesus Christ and buy

Come ye weary heavy laden
Bruised and broken full of sin
If you tarry till you're better
You may never enter in
Not the righteous not the righteous
Sinners Jesus came to win

Blockbuster Anyone?

Posted by Chris

Just updating some information on the free iPods offer & noticed they had taken down the AOL offer. It's probably just as well - the offer was easy enough to complete (45 day trial period), but they gave you a MAJOR hard time trying to cancel (they kept me on the phone for a good 15 minutes trying to convince me to stay with AOL even though I never actually used the trial - just signed up).

Looks like the best deal now is the Blockbuster Online one. This is a Netflix-like service (mail-order DVD rental). It is a 2-week trial period. Andrea & I actually did this about a month or so ago & wound up renting something like 4-5 DVDs during that time period. You also automatically get 2 free online coupons you can use to rent at your local Blockbuster store that last past the trial period. Cancellation is easy, also, & can be done online through your account management on the Blockbuster Online site. Pretty good deal all around!

Guess Who Just Walked In

Posted by Chris

Sitting at Will's Cafe, my bi-weekly Thursday morning destination for a referral club I'm in. I usually hang out for 1-1 1/2 hours after we're through meeting (we meet from 7-8a) to work because they I like the atmosphere, they play good music, and they offer free WiFi Internet access. This morning we were in the middle of our meeting when we turn & see former Congressman J.C. Watts walk through the door! Our jaws dropped as it was a little surreal for a minute. He is speaking here for some kind of breakfast/conference they are having in the attached theatre. Too cool! I think it's a little ironic that a great OU sports legend walks through the room just two days before the Red River Shootout! (Boomer Sooner!)

On my way in this morning they were talking about the big game (a couple of the DJs are OU fans - even played the fight song). They had a guest call in - a Texas fan - who played the Texas fight song through his cell phone on the air. The DJ just sat there & said a few amusing remarks while it played & then when it was through she said, "It's a good thing you played it today because you won't get a chance to play it this weekend!" Ha! Can't wait for Saturday!

UPDATE: I got up the nerve to walk up to J.C. Watts as he was getting set to leave the coffee shop. I asked him for an autograph & thanked him for his years of service to our country & for living his faith out. One more thing ... I asked him if he was ready for the big game and he said, "Oh, yeah!"

TiVo & Netflix Partnership!

Posted by Chris

Okay, this is HUGE news in the TiVo World ... TiVo & Netflix today announced that they will be working together to offer Internet downloads of movie titles. This means that TiVo subscribers will be able to purchase & download to watch movies instead of going to the local video store or wait on their DVDs from mail-in video places like Netflix. Too cool!

Now I'm patiently waiting for them to announce the availability of their "TiVo To Go" service/product that will allow me to transfer programs/recordings from my TiVo to my home computer to burn onto DVD or to my laptop to take with me to watch (while on vacation or during lunch breaks).
