My Son, the Gentleman

Posted by Chris

You know, not that it happens 100% of the time, but our boys are really becoming quite the gentleman.

Had a funny thing happen last week in the midst of our week of illness. We were driving home from soccer practice on Friday night. I had all three kids with me (Emerie goes into the childcare at the Y while the boys are at practice & I am working or working out). I was telling the boys that they needed to be praying for Andrea as she was still not feeling good after having battled this bug since early in the morning that same day.

Josiah and Micah were telling me how there was, "No way that I'm going in that room!" with their mom, in case they were to catch the bug once again. I had already been considering sleeping on the couch to lower my chances of the same, so I commented that I agreed and that I didn't know what I was going to do (meaning, whether I would sleep in my bedroom or downstairs because of mom still being sick). Josiah looked at me and said, "You know what you're going to do - you're going to take care of your wife!" I chuckled and explained to him that of course, I would be taking care of her, and that I was talking about where I would sleep.

Andrea got a good chuckle from that when we got home :-)

Weigh-In Time

Posted by Chris

Been so busy this weekend that I forgot to post how my weigh-in went this past Friday. I looked at the calendar & back through my records & realized that we've been on Weight Watchers this go round since Feb 7th. We had a couple of weeks we were kind of 'off' that we didn't really count points. So, minus these two weeks, that puts Friday's weigh-in at about 9 weeks.

I surprised myself & weighed in at 190lbs! I was hoping to just lose a pound, but was pleasantly surprised that I had lost two from the week before. I think it helped that I worked out 4 out of 5 work days last week (counting digging up a garden on Friday as one of those).

My hope is still to be working out 5 days each week - with two of those on the weights. We'll see how this next week goes. I'm super-pumped, because if I lose anything this week it will mean that I will be weighing in the 180s for the first time in 5 years!

The End of a Long Week/Weekend

Posted by Chris

This has been an exhausting week. With the kids getting sick (at three different times), and Andrea being sick over the weekend (she just started feeling better last night), it has been a mess.

We were feeling pretty good about things yesterday afternoon. I had taken the kids to Josiah's soccer game first thing in the morning, we had hung out at the house after that over lunch/finished working on a small (very small) garden patch for Andrea & the kids, and then took Micah to his game in the middle of the afternoon. Coming home, Josiah was complaining about his stomach being upset. Got home & he indeed spent some time in the bathroom (trying to give you the sanitized version of the story :-) ).

Then he spent about half an hour complaining on the couch about his stomach hurting. This was all pretty strange because he had been acting fine all day long and hadn't experiencing any sickness-related symptoms for at least 24 hours.

YMCA - A Better Picture of Discipleship?

Posted by Chris

From an article I'm going to post on the Threads website on Monday...

I'm sitting in the 'Coffee Nook' of the local YMCA like I do every Friday night. We arrive about 5pm, and after my eldest son runs off to his soccer practice, & I get my other two kids to their respective childcare spots, I usually grab a cup of Java and find a comfortable place in this 'kids free zone' haven they have carved out near the lobby. I plug my headphones in, throw my iTunes Party Shuffle on and settle in to spend some quiet time preparing for our Sunday morning up/rooted teaching times.

Tonight as I was paused for a minute (trying to get someone who had a clue to let me know if their WiFi was working) I took notice around me at something that I hadn't really paid much attention to before: all around me passed people of various ethnicities and various ages - all here for different reasons. For some, the Y holds a place where they can unwind after a long day's work. For others, it is a place to meet up with friends for a game of racquetball or basketball. Some come to pursue greater health in their lives. Still others hang out at the soccer fields or around the pool - visiting with friends and acquaintances they will likely not see apart from this weekly practice pilgrimage. Others come, like me, to find a quiet spot to enjoy a semi-decent cup of flavored coffee and read a book, the days news, or tie-up some loose ends for work.

Sick Wife

Posted by Chris

Well, looks like Andrea came down with the stomach bug that our kids have been fighting all this week. The boys both are feeling better after both catching it on Wednesday. My sweet wife told me she was sick when I woke up for work this morning - she had been sick several times during the night and had gone down to the hallway bathroom instead of the one in our room so that she wouldn't wake me up. I can't say I'd be so kind - I'd probably be waking her up just to have some company for my misery.

I hate it for her because this has been such an exhausting week for her - keeping up with her regular weekly schedule, homeschooling & also taking care of sick kids. I also hate it for her because she was supposed to leave this afternoon for a weekend planning retreat with some other homeschool moms/friends of hers. :-(

I normally work out-of-the-office on Fridays, so I was already planning on working from home or from Panera (my work home-away-from-home). So, I'm taking a family sick day to take care of Andrea & help with the kids.

Here's praying that I don't come down with it, too, since I'm the only one it hasn't hit. I predict that my hands are going to be raw from washing them after I touch anything today! :-)

Sick Kiddos

Posted by Chris

Well, we officially have a stomach virus reeking havoc on the Ediger household. It hit Emerie first on Sunday night - she was up most of the night with it. She was puny for a couple of days, and then this morning it hit Micah. Sick a few times this morning, hung out in his room all day (quarantined). Tonight it hit Josiah (he just came out of his room - getting sick for a third time). No fun for them, no fun for us, no fun for anyone. :-(

Made Me Smile - Google vs. God

Okay, I'm not the biggest of 'church sign' fans (actually, I'd probably be classified as the 'most church signs make me sick' kind of guy). Have to give props to this one though...

Movie Night… Again

Posted by Chris

One of the things that Andrea & I have always loved to do together is watch movies. Seems like we don't get a lot of chances anymore - especially with kids. By the time the boys are in bed (Emerie goes to bed earlier) it is usually late enough that we're getting pretty tired & too late to begin a movie most nights. So our movie nights are mostly confined to the occasional movie date night that we take by ourselves, with friends, or with the family (saw Meet the Robinsons a couple of weeks ago when Gary was here - GREAT movie!).

This week we're making up for not having watched a movie together in awhile. Andrea gets on the Davidson County library website and puts hold requests on books, movies, music, etc. She's begun doing this for movies. Takes awhile for newer movies, but it's really cool when your turn comes around. We have a few movies that hit our turn this week.

Weigh-In Time

Friday again. I was a little apprehensive this week, I have to admit. Last week's only-losing-one-pound following the haven't-lost-anything week the week before made me really wanting this week to make a difference. I counted points better, worked out a couple of times, and feel like I'm getting back on track again after a couple of weeks of slow going.

Weighed in at 192 lbs today. That makes 18 lbs in right at two months - not too shabby! 8 more to go!

New Book: Organic Community

Posted by Chris

Just picked up a new book to read yesterday from my friend Craig. It's by Joseph R. Myers & is called Organic Community: Creating a Place Where People Naturally Connect. Myers wrote another outstanding book that I would highly recommend The Search to Belong: Rethinking Intimacy, Community, and Small Groups. Here's the back cover for Community:

"Can you create community through master plans and elaborate strategies? Sometimes, says Joseph Myers - but more often, lasting authentic connections occur organically within healthy environments. Organic Community offers you practical guidance for helping your church or organization create spaces where community naturally comes into being."

I'm excited about this book as I highly respect Myers and what he has to say after reading The Search to Belong and because bringing about community is what is at the very core of what we are doing with up/rooted & the young adults at Gladeville.

I'll post a review here as soon as I'm done. I've read about a third of it so far (while working out yesterday at the Y), so hopefully it won't take me more than a week or so to finish.

I Don’t Want to Buy a Van

Posted by Chris

Let me just start by saying - I hate car troubles! To make matters worse - I don't trust mechanics. Those two things make things really difficult when something happens to one of our vehicles.

I'd have to say that we have been blessed with having fairly minimal problems with any of our cars - all the way back with our first car purchase together - a new 1994 Mazda Protege (man, that was a great car). That is, until the past year or so. I think we have spent more on car repairs in the last 12 months than in the past nearly 12 years of being married.

Which brings me to today...

A World Void of Advertising?

Posted by Chris

Ran into an interesting article this morning from perusing Digg about a town in Brazil, Sao Paulo, whose mayor has banned all outdoor billboard advertising. Really interesting read & great Flickr set of photos form a journalist following the dismantling process..

Working Break

Posted by Chris

Well, let's just say that today didn't wind up being anything like I had imagined it would be. Let's count the ways...
  1. Found out yesterday that a project at work was much more involved than I had suspected, and since I procrastinated until the end of the week (in addition to being behind from my Masters trip last week) I was happily (sarcastic) having to work on it at home last night... and this morning... and this afternoon... and now (except for these few minutes that I'm taking a break)
  2. We decided to paint the downstairs this weekend, which, of course, was a decision we made before I realized my work project dilemmas... Andrea's time working on the painting job = probably 7-8 hours now, Chris' = more like 1-2 (I did help patch some holes, re-route an electrical cord to our furnace and a few other things - mainly last night
  3. It rained. Happened yesterday, too. Happened some the day before as well. Rain is nice, don't get me wrong, just has a habit of changing plans, like...
  4. One out of two soccer practices last night rained out... both games rained out today - hooray! Except... #1 + #2 + #3 = Andrea & I with lots to do, basement off-limits, for the most part, from dogs & kids, & kiddos stuck inside on a rainy day - all of which adds up to an upstairs pretty much in shambles from the kids playing all day.
  5. Clean up tonight - we took a brief break from respective work and ate dinner together with the kids, talked with my dad & Cheryl on the phone (who'll be here in 3 weeks! Yeah!), and helped clean up the house a little (including cleaning the hamster & mouse cages - oh, don't think I've mentioned the two newest members of the Ediger household - different post for a different day)

  6. That's it. Not horrible, just definitely a twist in what I thought we'd be doing this weekend. Now it's back to work and try and get a good night's sleep (with hopefully no work project left to do tomorrow!).

Blog Weary - a Solution?

Posted by Chris

Well, after poking around the Internet this week after my earlier Blog Weary, I think I may have found one solution. There is a great little app for the Mac called "Ecto" that is supposed to be a desktop solution for handling multiple blogs. It can't do everything (won't update Twitter, for example), but it does handle writing a post once & having it post to multiple blogs at the same time :-)

So, this is my first attempt. I'm actually writing this on my Mac with Ecto & posting it to our Ediger blog and to my Gladeville blog as well.

I have 20 days left to try it out, but I think I'm going to like it!

EDIT: Okay, figured out that it doesn't post to more than one blog simultaneously. But, it does allow you to easily double-click a post on one blog & with a couple of clicks post it to another blog - definitely better than trying to manage two blogs at once the old way.

Weigh-In Time

Posted by Chris

Well, Friday came along again, which means my weekly weigh-in for Weight Watchers. Yesterday I weighed in at 194 lbs, which means I lost one pound in the last week. Although I would have liked to have lost 2-3, one was enough after a week of having the GA trip and then not counting my points for the first half of this past week (although I was still eating smart).

Keeping score, that makes it 16 lbs I've lost in roughly two months (not quite) and 10 lbs to go toward my goal of 184 lbs!

New Photos from Masters Trip

Posted by Chris

I went back through my photos from our Masters trip last week (all 148 of them). Found some of the eventual winner Zach Johnson. Of course, I had no clue who he was when I was taking his picture. I actually was taking Chris DiMarco's picture and he just happened to be playing with him on Monday :-)

Blog Weary

Posted by Chris

I like to blog. Really, I do. I've always enjoyed writing, and blogging provides an outlet for me to think outloud, for people to peer-in to how my brain works. I like it.

That being said, I have to admit that I'm a bit weary with the prospect of blogging as of late. This is mainly due to the fact that I am feeling a bit schizophrenic with who I am online. I blog at Gladeville. I blog at Threads. I blog here. I could actually blog through my MySpace, or Facebook pages, although I prefer to redirect people to one of the aforementioned blogging outlets. Add that to my newly discovered Twitter - and others that I'm not going to post because I don't want to feel any more pressure keeping up with things.

Good Easter

Posted by Chris

Today was a good day. Went to Easter service this morning at Gladeville. We cancelled our young adults group which usually meets on Sunday mornings, which means (1) I didn't have to prepare to teach this week, & (2) we got home by 11:30am. We took some pictures of the kids (forthcoming on our Flickr page), gave them their Easter baskets full of candy, books, & the new Charlotte's Web DVD. Hid/hunted eggs. Had our friends the Webbs over for a great ham & turkey dinner (best ham I've ever had - hands down!). Visited with Craig & Barbara before they had to leave. Watched the Masters for several hours. Finished some web work for the church. Updated my Facebook page. Emailed some old friends. Watched the OU scrimmage game I had TiVo-ed from yesterday. And now I'm weary-eyed posting to several blogs (see next post). Good stuff - busy, but good day.

Weigh-In Time

Posted by Chris

Well, I survived the Masters-trip week! I weighed in on Friday at 195 lbs - no loss for the week, but no gain, either, which was my goal. I'm back on track this week - even with a higher-points-than-usual Easter ham dinner with the Webbs :-)

Trip to The Masters

Posted by Chris

Had an incredible opportunity to attend the practice round of The Masters with Andrea's dad this past Monday. Overwhelmed is probably too light of a word - the beauty of the course itself was amazing! I told Gary that I'd have a hard time playing on the course, it looked so immaculate!

I posted a few reflections on my church blog: "A New View of The Masters"

I definitely have The Masters fever now - can't wait to put my official Masters hat on (along with the boys wearing the ones I bought them) and sit back & enjoy the coverage on TV this weekend!

I'm posting some pictures from the trip on our Flickr page. They're moving slowly, but should be fully up in the next hour or so. You can view them here: The Masters Trip

A New View of The Masters

Posted by Chris

I had the incredible opportunity to see The Masters practice round this past Monday with my father-in-law. I'm not sure this would qualify as a 'once in a lifetime' experience - but it is pretty rare. Incredible opportunity, gorgeous golf course. We had a great time.

I don't think I'll ever see The Masters on TV quite the same again. It's one thing to see it on the screen - quite different to see it in person (kind of reminds me of the verse that talks about how what we see now is merely an imperfect reflection of what is to come in heaven one day). Whenever I got home I quickly queued up the TiVo to record all kinds of Masters programming that's on this week (including every round that is televised).

Read a good article, as well, that was running on Yahoo! Sports this morning. It is entitled, "Ten years and counting" and it addresses the lack of african-american involvement in the PGA, even after Tiger Wood's incredible performance in the 1997 Masters & the success he has enjoyed since. I'd highly recommend the read. "Ten Years and Counting" (Yahoo! Sports)

Weigh-In Time

Posted by Chris

Okay - posting this 5 days late & 2 days before I post again on my weight loss progress. I weighed-in at 195 lbs last Friday. Another two lbs toward my goal! Felt good, too. I went out & bought a few new clothes & was able to buy some shorts in the next size down!

I weigh-in again on Friday, but not sure how well I'm going to do. Honestly, if I maintain my weight from last week it will be a good thing. Our trip to the Masters (will post more here in a minute) + Famous Dave's + Logans Roadhouse = no weight loss for this week most likely. I tried to watch what I ate, and I certainly got my exercise in (we probably walked 4-5 miles on the course on Monday). Guess we'll see how it went. Hopefully I won't be pushed back too far on my track.
