Back to School

Posted by Chris

I think I just convinced my husband that starting a batch of homemade brownies is a good idea while I type this. Is there anything better than warm homemade brownies and a glass of cold milk (from Braum's, of course)? I think not. While he's heading to the kitchen I wanted to tell you a little bit about the boys' first day(s) of school. Josiah had his first day yesterday. He came home telling us about snack & recess time (his favorite parts of the day). He also said that whoever has the most bears gets a prize - evidently this is what his teacher uses for deterring juvenile delinquents! He looked so exhausted on the way home I thought he might fall asleep in the van. Oh yes, he also liked lunch time. I had sent a note on a napkin in his lunchbox for the first day of school. He said his teacher read it to him, but that he had already read it. I asked him if he told his teacher that he could read and said 'no, not yet.' I'm sure she'll figure it out soon.

Micah had his first day of preschool today. He had no qualms whatsoever about heading off into his classroom. He was so excited. He came home telling us how well he obeyed his teacher and that his favorite part of the day was when Miss Christy read a story about a zoo. He also brought home a picture he painted of the sun, moon, & stars. He was pretty proud of himself for being a big preschooler guy now. There's a few pics of both of the boys in the "Back to School" [not currently active] album in the gallery.

Being home with just Emerie for a couple of hours this morning was pretty surreal. I think I'm starting to remember what it is like to have only one child - even if it's only for a few hours a week. Monday while Si was at kindergarten, Micah did very well. We had good time for just us when Emerie was napping and today I had good time with just Emerie. (I get time with just Si when Micah and Emerie nap in the afternoons).

At this point I have to say that everyone was right... and I knew they would be. One minute you're rocking a baby and picking out matching baby booties and the next you're picking out school supplies and taking them to their first day of preschool, then kindergarten. Soon I'll be watching them wiggle loose teeth, listening to piano practice, and quizzing them for spelling tests. I'll be holding my breath (and the dashboard) while they learn to drive... visiting colleges with them and helping them pack....listening intently on the other end of the phone while they excitedly tell me about someone they've met....and watch them look in wonder at their own babies growing so quickly before their eyes. And I think this is where I came in, isn't it?

It's an amazing thing, this life, I am privileged to live. The day Josiah was born, life somehow went into fastforward and some days I think I'm desparately trying to push the slow-motion button so as not to forget the expressions on their faces and the hilarious expressions coming out of those tiny heads! I know I'll never have time to write it ALL down or to remember it all (and I don't have time to feel guilty about it either), so I think I'll just savor the moments as they come. To all of you reading this who told me how fast it would go - you're right, just like I knew you would be... and to those of you who are wondering if 'they' are right - they are. But I suspect you already knew....

Lisa:

Andrea, can’t believe Josiah is in kindergarten!  Joshua starts school this next week.  I was laughing (and tearing up) at what you wrote.  I"m a little ahead of you so I’m already at the loose teeth, piano practice and spelling test point. It is quite amazing how quickly they grow!  Especially when some days seem to drag by. Jacob is growing too quickly and I"m sure that Emerie is too.  He’s running now and saying many words.  I hate that I don’t get to see my niece and nephews more often!  We are going to be without e-mail for awhile because we have to get a new computer.  I wanted to check the website while I could.  Love you guys!  Give Emerie and the boys a kiss for me.  Lisa
