Da Vinci Code & More

Posted by Chris

Andrea & I went on a double-date with Craig & Barbara Webb this weekend to see The Da Vinci Code. I've been reading the book in preparation for our teaching series in June for the past week & a half or so. You should have seen me before we left! I was reading every chance I could get, trying to intake as much of the book as I could before I subjected myself to the movie. I knew that there would be discrepencies, but I also knew that I didn't want the movie to ruin the book for me. If you have a choice, definitely pick up the book. It is about 450 pages long, but it is an extremely easy & good read.

Overall I would probably give the movie a B-. I admit I'm jaded in at least two ways from probably the majority of people who will see the movie: A) I've read the book (at least partly, with plans to finish it before June 4th) and B) I'm a committed Christian. These two things kept me both a little skeptical & unimpressed when it came down to it. No one is going to win any Academy Awards for this one. It will be a blockbuster, mind you, but only because of the success of the book, the hype surrounding the movie release & the overwhelming tendency for the millions who've read the book to largely ignore any bad reviews there are of the movie & to see it anyway (and there are many bad reviews).

The movie doesn't come close to matching the intensity and intrigue of the book. Entertaining? Sort of. Worth a $10 movie ticket? Not sure. I do think it is worth $10 to prepare yourself to have an intelligent spiritual conversation with others around you. I think it worth at least a matinee ticket to prepare yourself, if you're planning on being there, to have some background going in to our Unlocking the Da Vinci Code series in June.

Been a busy week apart from going out on Saturday. Looks like we're in the middle of another busy week the week after as well. It's amazing to me how full our lives can become so easily. We're not super-involved in much outside of homeschooling, Gladeville, and YMCA soccer for Josiah (which is very schedule-friendly compared to other sports/leagues). Yet I find myself looking at the calendar wondering when the next free night, even more, the next free weekend that there is. Memorial Day is shaping up to be that for us. We're planning on painting around the house, which is something that we've been wanting to do for quite awhile. We'll still find some time to grill out, play with the kids, and relax (at least while the paint is drying).
